End-to-End Chain of Custody for Estate and Smallholder Coffee
Coffee changes physical form four times between cherry and green bean. Origin integrity has to survive every one of those transformations.
The challenge
- Cherry from estates and smallholder blocks moves through pulping, fermentation, drying, hulling and grading — each a point where lots are combined and identity is conventionally lost.
- European buyers now request plot geolocation and Scope 3 intensity per tonne alongside cupping scores, and a single unanswered questionnaire can cost a season’s contract.
- Shade-grown plots under canopy are difficult to interpret from satellite alone, so remote sensing cannot be the sole basis for a land-use claim.
How the platform solves it
Plot registry across estates and smallholders
Every block and smallholding is registered with polygon boundaries, shade regime, variety and elevation, creating a single registry that spans both organised estates and fragmented supplier plots.
Transformation-aware batch genealogy
Each processing step — pulping, fermentation, drying yard, hulling, grading — is recorded as an event with input and output batch identifiers and conversion ratios, so a green bean lot resolves backwards through every transformation to its contributing plots.
Satellite corroboration, field verification
Canopy and land-cover time series is used to prioritise which plots receive a physical verification visit rather than to make final determinations. Each claim records whether its evidence is remotely observed, field verified or farmer reported.
Emissions intensity per lot
Cultivation inputs, pulping water and energy, drying method and transport are captured as activity data and converted using versioned, source-cited factors, producing an intensity figure per tonne of green coffee that opens to its method.
Outcomes
- Origin preserved through four physical transformations
- Buyer questionnaires answered from the platform rather than reconstructed
- Land-use claims that state their evidence type honestly
- Emissions intensity available per lot, not as an annual average
