Deforestation-Free Cocoa Sourcing Across Licensed Buying Agents
Cocoa reaches the port through layers of buying agents and society sheds. Making that chain EUDR-ready means digitising the agent, not just the farmer.
The challenge
- Cocoa procurement runs through licensed buying agents and community societies who purchase from hundreds of farmers each, aggregate at shed level, and deliver to the exporter with a weight slip and nothing else.
- Farm boundaries are unmapped, many plots sit adjacent to protected forest, and the exporter has no way to demonstrate that a given delivery excludes produce from restricted areas.
- Agents work in low-connectivity rural areas and have no incentive to adopt systems that only serve the buyer above them.
How the platform solves it
Walk-and-plot mapping in offline conditions
Farm boundaries are captured by walking the perimeter on a mobile device with no live connection required, with the polygon rendered on screen so the operator can see errors immediately. Records queue locally and sync when the device reaches coverage.
Restricted zone detection
Protected forest and reserve boundaries are loaded as reference layers. Any plot intersecting a restricted zone is flagged at registration and blocked from entering the compliant supply pool, rather than being discovered during a buyer audit.
Agent-level procurement digitisation
The buying agent records purchases against registered farmers on the same device, generating a receipt for the farmer and a digital intake record for the exporter. The agent gets a working procurement tool; the exporter gets identity capture before pooling — the only point at which origin can still be preserved.
Volume reconciliation across the shed
Mapped plot area and regional yield ranges define a plausible ceiling per farmer per season. Intake exceeding that ceiling is flagged at the shed, closing the route by which unmapped produce enters a mapped supply chain.
