Top Global Sustainability Regulations Every Agribusiness Should Know in 2026
EUDR, CSRD, CSDDD, BRSR Core, CBAM, PPWR and the digital product passport — what each one asks of an agri-food business, and how they overlap.
EU Deforestation Regulation
Requires that covered commodities placed on the EU market are deforestation-free, legally produced and covered by a due diligence statement filed before entry. Demands plot-level geolocation and a documented risk assessment. For Indian exporters this bites hardest in coffee, rubber, wood and derived products, soya, cocoa and palm derivatives.
Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive
Extends and standardises sustainability disclosure for large EU companies and, materially for suppliers, requires value-chain data those companies do not hold. If you sell to a CSRD-reporting buyer, their obligation becomes your data request — usually with a deadline attached to a purchase order.
Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive
Moves beyond disclosure into obligation: identifying, preventing and mitigating adverse human rights and environmental impacts across the chain of activities. For agri-food suppliers this raises labour practice, land rights and environmental impact at farm level from reputational concern to contractual requirement.
BRSR and BRSR Core
India’s framework for listed companies, with a defined set of core KPIs requiring independent assurance and phased extension to value chain partners. For agri-businesses the difficulty concentrates in GHG footprint, water footprint and inclusive development — all of which depend on farm-level data the company does not currently hold.
Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism
Currently focused on carbon-intensive industrial goods rather than agriculture, but structurally important: it normalises the idea that embedded emissions are declared and priced at the border. Agricultural extension is not in force, and planning as though embedded-attribute declaration is permanent is prudent.
Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation
Sets recyclability, recycled content and waste reduction requirements for packaging placed on the EU market. Food exporters encounter it through their packaging rather than their produce, and it arrives with its own data and documentation demands.
Digital Product Passport
A standardised machine-readable record travelling with the product, rolling out category by category. Agricultural products follow, and the underlying requirements — persistent batch identity, origin resolution, method-stated environmental attributes — take a season of fieldwork to build.
Voluntary schemes that behave like regulation
EcoVadis ratings, CDP disclosure and buyer-specific ESG questionnaires are formally voluntary and commercially mandatory. They arrive more frequently than legislation and often set the practical deadline.
The overlap is the opportunity
Every framework above ultimately asks for the same underlying thing: verified, farm-level activity data with documented method and retrievable evidence. Built once and built properly, one data layer answers all of them. Built framework by framework, each new regulation becomes another project.
