What actually happens to agricultural data collection in low-connectivity geographies, and how to build for it.
The connectivity assumption breaks everything downstream
Software designed on the assumption of a live connection fails in the field in specific, predictable ways: forms that will not open, validations that cannot run, photographs that never upload, and field officers who quietly revert to paper. The paper never gets digitised, and the season ends with a data gap nobody flagged.
Design rules that survive the field
Every form must open, validate and save with no connection. Sync must be resumable and visible — the officer needs to see what has and has not uploaded. Media must compress locally. Conflicts must resolve by rule, not by asking a field officer to arbitrate.
Evidence capture in low bandwidth
Photographs with embedded GPS and timestamp are the most valuable evidence a field visit produces and the hardest to transmit. Capture at full quality locally, queue a compressed version for immediate sync, and upload originals opportunistically when the device reaches connectivity.
Supervision without connectivity
Quality control cannot wait for sync. Build validation into capture — plausible ranges, mandatory evidence, boundary checks against the recorded plot — so errors surface while the officer is still standing in the field and can correct them.
